Disney Aulani Character Breakfast Review

During our stay at the Disney Aulani Resort, one of my must-dos was breakfast at Makahiki for the character breakfast. When we are visiting Walt Disney World it is always a must for me to do one character dining meal, so when I saw that Aulani had a character breakfast I booked it right away.

For some people eating with Disney characters might not be at the top of their list of things to do when they are enjoying a luxury family resort in Hawaii. For us, as Disney-loving fans, it was on the top of the list.

If you have anyone in your party that is celebrating anything be sure they are wearing their special button. Hannah, my 6-year-old was wearing her birthday button, and the ukulele player/singer included Happy Birthday to her when he was singing and she was given a special birthday treat.

What is a Disney Character Breakfast?

A Disney character breakfast is a dining experience offered at certain Disney theme parks, resorts, and restaurants. During a character breakfast, guests can enjoy a meal while Disney characters make appearances, visiting each table for interactions, photos, and autographs. It’s an opportunity for guests, especially children, to meet and greet their favorite Disney characters in a fun and interactive setting.

Our Dining Experience

When you first arrive at the Aulani Disney resort character breakfast you check in and then get in line for photos with Mickey Mouse. They told us there is normally a small line, but when we checked in for breakfast there was no line at all and we walked right up to Mickey.

After photos with Mickey, you are taken on a walk to your table, which also includes a stop at Goofy for photos.

Once seated at the table the the server comes and gets your drink orders and then brings the pastry basket and the fruit plates.

While eating the characters make their way to everyone’s table to spend a few minutes hanging out and taking photos.

Then your main course is brought out and characters continue to stop and visit you at your table.

At the end of your meal, the server will come to you with the printed photos that you took at the photopass and you are able to purchase them if you wish. You are not obligated to purchase them, but I do think that it made for a nice family photo from our trip.

My husband ordered the Hawaiian-Style Loco Moco. It is made with a hamburger steak, two eggs sunny side up, Portuguese sausage, fried rice, and Maui onion gravy. If you are wanting a local favorite this is the one to get!

Where is the Character Breakfast at Aulani?

The character breakfast at Aulani is held at the Makahiki – The Bounty of the Islands restaurant. The restaurant is located on the first floor of the main building near The Ōlelo Room. When you walk outside of the restaurant be sure to take a look at the beautiful koi pond that is outside.

What is the seating like at Aulani Character Breakfast?

There is indoor seating and outdoor seating at the restaurant. We were seated outside, which was perfect because it was a nice day. They have shades that they pull down so the sun is not in your eyes while you are eating.

Is the Disney Aulani Character Breakfast worth it?

Yes! My whole family enjoyed the character dining experience with meeting Disney characters and the food was delicious. We all left full and loved our meals. I think it was the perfect way to add some Disney-loving fun that is right in your face while on our vacation at the Disney resort in Hawaii.

On top of the food being worth it and the characters the decor and design of the restaurant make it worth it too.  The Aulani restaurant showcases glass designs and murals that capture the essence of the Hawaiian Makahiki season, a traditional celebration of the harvest from which the restaurant derives its name. It is truly a beautiful restaurant to enjoy a meal at.

What Food is served at the Disney Aulani Character Breakfast?

The character breakfast starts with a basket of pastries that include coconut danishes, guava danishes, blueberry muffins, and butter croissants.

Each person will then be brought out a plate of fruit that includes pineapple, cantaloupe, blackberries, raspberries, and strawberries.

For the main course, each person gets to pick one of the menu items. Everything that we ordered was amazing. There are plenty of options to pick from, in fact, you may have trouble picking which one you want because they all sound so good.

There are 3 different omelets, Mickey waffles, french toast, Hawiaan Loco Moco, and more to pick from!

How much does the Disney Aulani Character Breakfast Cost?

The breakfast is not cheap at Aulani but the character breakfasts that we have gone to at Disney World are not cheap either. It is $49.00 for adults and Keiki (kids ages 9 and under) are $29.00.

What Characters Are at the Disney Aulani Character Breakfast?

Upon entering the restaurant you will get in line to see Mickey Mouse. While walking to your table you will meet Goofy. While at your table a few different characters including Pluto, Max

When you are taking photos with Mickey there is a photopass photographer, but they will also use your phone or camera to take photos for you. When the other characters come around there is not a photographer but the serving staff is amazing and will take photos of your whole group if you ask them to.

Do you need to be a resort guest to book the character breakfast?

No. Anyone can book a character breakfast even if they are not a resort guest. You will also get free parking for the time of your dining reservation if your meal total is over $50.

Do you Need to Make Reservations?

Yes. You do need to make reservations and I suggest making them in advance as they do sell out of seating quickly as there are only a limited amount of Character dining reservations for the breakfast available each day. I would suggest booking your character dining experience at the same time as you book your stay.

Is Aulani Resort Character breakfast a buffet?

The character breakfast at Aulani used to be a buffet-style meal. In recent years, including when we were there in September of 2022 and currently as of 2023 it has since switched. It is now a sit-down 3-course breakfast that has 2 starter dishes and an entree that you order from the specific menu.

Is the Aulani Resort Character breakfast worth it?

We say yes! It is expensive, yes but the food was amazing, and the character interactions were super fun for the kids. I think it is totally worth having a character breakfast at Aulani Resort.
